War Casualty’s Challenge

A War Casualty’s Challenge to Americans!

Photo by Sue Charles

Inspired during preparation for Pre-Veterans’ Day Memorial Service, 10/28/2006, with thoughts of someone who gave “the last full measure of devotion” in defense of Freedom’s Cause.

Grieve not for me, I gave my all to answer Freedom’s duty call;

I shielded home and loved ones’ life from battle’s din and bloody strife.

I learned that freedom is not free; there is a price for liberty…

Eternally vigilant all must stay to keep encroaching wolves away,

Some robed in clothing of a sheep, deceiving those inclined to sleep.

And watchmen look the other way, neglecting there to watch and pray.

I gave my life for Worthy Cause, to do again I would not pause,

To stay the tide of slav’ry’s flow. To nowhere else can free men go;

In all the earth there is no place – no shelter for the human race –

No bolstered fortress to defend if in defeat this War should end.

So rise, good people, take your place, stand up for right, and by God’s grace

You’ll stem the tide, extend the Light; press back the dark of evil’s night!

“All that is necessary for the forces of evil to triumph is for enough good men to do nothing.”   — Attributed to Edmund Burke (1729-97)
